Cleaner Gear Starts Here: Celebrating the bluesign and Osprey Partnership
At Osprey, the path to cleaner gear starts long before a pack ever reaches your hands. Since becoming a bluesign system partner in 2021, Osprey has taken a proactive approach to environmental and social responsibility. This begins at the chemical level and extends across every step of the supply chain.
Through this partnership, Osprey has strengthened its commitment to using safer chemistry, responsible manufacturing practices, and more sustainable materials in its award-winning packs and accessories. Today, that commitment is clearer than ever.
80% of Osprey’s Spring 2025 Product Line Is bluesign Certified
In just a few seasons, Osprey has made significant progress. While none of its Fall 2023 products carried the bluesign product label, that number rose to 47% by Spring 2024, 69% by Fall 2024, and now stands at 80% for Spring 2025. These figures reflect the percentage of Osprey’s full product line, not just a limited collection.
What Does bluesign Mean?
The bluesign system is designed to reduce environmental impact and protect people throughout the production process. It helps keep harmful substances out of manufacturing by using a comprehensive substance list and strict input stream management. As a result, only safe chemicals and materials are allowed in.
There are two key designations to look for:
- bluesign Approved: Components like textiles or raw materials that meet strict safety and environmental criteria.
- bluesign Product: Finished goods made from at least 90% bluesign approved fabrics or yarns and 20% approved components. Remaining parts must come from qualified suppliers, and production must follow selected International Labour Organization standards.
Design for Environments: Osprey’s Holistic Approach
Osprey’s sustainability efforts are guided by its “Design for Environments” strategy, which focuses on:
- Materials: Shifting main body panels and liners to bluesign approved fabrics was an early milestone.
- Chemistry: bluesign’s input stream management ensures chemicals are safe from the start of the supply chain.
- Social responsibility: As a system partner, Osprey upholds labor rights, safe workplaces, and strict process controls.
It Started with Talon Earth 22
The first product to carry the bluesign product label was the Talon Earth 22, a technical pack built with rigorous sustainability standards. Since then, Osprey has applied the same principles across its full range of outdoor, travel, and everyday gear.
Where Will Your Lighter Footprint Take You?
Every bluesign product is made with a lighter environmental footprint and a deeper respect for the people and planet behind it. With 80% of Osprey’s Spring 2025 line now carrying the bluesign product designation, the brand continues to lead by example in responsible design.
