bluepass Certification

Understanding bluepass Certification

bluepass is the new certification mark from bluesign. It identifies consumer products, articles, and chemical products whose production processes have met bluesign Criteria.

bluepass replaces the previous bluesign® APPROVED and bluesign® PRODUCT designations. Existing labels remain valid where they are already in use and will transition to bluepass through 2026.

Every bluepass label carries a QR code. Scanning it takes consumers and buyers to a bluesign-controlled verification page with the full details behind the claim.

Three certification marks. One system.

bluesign certifies production processes, not facilities as entities or finished products themselves. The bluepass mark communicates the outcome of that certification at three different points in the supply chain: finished consumer goods, intermediate articles, and chemical products.

Consumer products carry the bluepass consumer product mark on finished goods, including apparel, denim, home textiles, equipment, and footwear. Articles, including fabrics, accessories, and trims, carry the bluepass article mark and are listed on the bluesign Guide. Chemical products carry the bluepass chemical product mark and are listed on the bluesign Finder.

What is changing

From April 2026, bluesign is transitioning from the bluesign® APPROVED and bluesign® PRODUCT designations to a unified bluepass mark system. The underlying bluesign Criteria and assessment process are unchanged. What is new is clearer naming, a standardized label format, and a QR code that gives anyone access to the evidence behind the claim.

bluepass replaces three previous designations

  • bluesign® PRODUCT is now bluepass Consumer Product, used on finished consumer goods
  • bluesign® APPROVED (articles) is now bluepass Article, used on fabrics, accessories, and trims
  • bluesign® APPROVED (chemicals) is now bluepass Chemical Product, used on assessed chemical products
  • Existing bluesign® APPROVED and bluesign® PRODUCT labels remain valid where they are already in use
  • All consumer-facing labels transitioning to bluepass by September 27, 2026 to meet the EU ECGT directive

What bluesign assesses

bluesign is a system-based certification. Before a product can carry a bluepass mark, the production processes behind it are assessed on-site by bluesign experts across six areas of responsibility.

Product Stewardship

Restricted substances, input control, and material traceability.

Resource Productivity

Water, energy, and waste performance.

Environmental Protection

Wastewater, air emissions, and solid waste controls.

Occupational Health and Safety

Worker exposure and safe handling of hazardous substances.

Emergency Preparedness

Hazard storage and emergency response

Social Responsibility

Labor standards and human rights due diligence.

How to identify a bluepass label

You’ll find bluepass labels on finished products, intermediate materials, and chemical product packaging. Every bluepass label includes the mark, a text claim, a QR code linking to bluesign.com/verify, and a unique certification ID.

bluepass Consumer Product

Look for this label on finished products such as:

  • Jackets, pants, or socks
  • Footwear and backpacks
  • Home and outdoor gear

This label appears on consumer products made with materials produced through processes that meet bluesign Criteria.

bluepass Article

Look for this label on materials and components used in:

  • Outdoor fabrics and yarns
  • Footwear and accessories
  • Specialized home textiles (linens, towels)

This label identifies intermediate articles produced through processes that meet bluesign Criteria. Articles are listed on the bluesign Guide.

bluepass Chemical Product

Look for this label on chemical product packaging and documentation used by manufacturers and chemical suppliers. Chemical products are listed on the bluesign Finder.

Are bluesign® APPROVED and bluesign® PRODUCT labels still valid?

Yes. Existing bluesign® APPROVED and bluesign® PRODUCT labels remain valid where they are already in use. bluesign System Partner companies are transitioning their physical labels and digital communications to bluepass through 2026.

The transition is driven by the EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) directive, which requires all consumer-facing sustainability claims to be substantiated with accessible evidence from September 27, 2026. The bluepass label, with its QR code linking to a bluesign-controlled verification page, is designed to meet that requirement.

The bluesign Criteria, the on-site assessment process, the six areas of responsibility, and the integrity of existing certifications have not changed. What has changed is the mark naming, a standardized label format, and QR code access to detailed substantiation.

Make Informed Choices

Products carrying a bluepass mark are made with inputs assessed for safer chemistry, responsible resource use, and reduced environmental impact. For brands, manufacturers, and supply chain partners, the bluesign Criteria document outlines the full requirements that production processes must meet to qualify for bluepass certification.
