Building Better Together: How Partnership Is Driving Sustainable Textile Production in the Americas

Monday, December 1, 2025|Events
At the AAFA Western Hemisphere Apparel & Footwear Compliance Conference in Guatemala City, leaders from Under Armour, Pettenati, and bluesign joined together to discuss how partnership across the value chain is reshaping responsible textile production in the Americas. The panel, “Building Better Together: Partnering with Purpose to Drive Sustainability,” was moderated by Barbara Oswald, Chief Commercial Officer at bluesign.

Representing key points in the supply chain were Vida Komer of Under Armour and Valeria Emondi of Pettenati Centro America. Their discussion focused on how shared standards, verified chemistry, and transparent communication can help the region move faster, strengthen compliance, and build more resilient supply chains.

Collaboration as the Foundation for Impact

The conversation opened with a shared acknowledgment: progress requires alignment across tiers. Brands, manufacturers, and system providers must collaborate if they want to meet rising expectations for sustainability, compliance, and product integrity.

Under Armour described how sustainability has moved from a compliance obligation to a cultural cornerstone within its organization. Pettenati highlighted the operational investments needed to align with both Under Armour’s expectations and the bluesign System. Together, the panelists emphasized that trust and transparency turn ambition into measurable impact.

Compliance Is Now Business-Critical

The panel addressed the accelerating regulatory landscape, including PFAS restrictions, wastewater expectations, digital product passport (DPP) requirements, and circularity rules emerging across major markets. Compliance has become a strategic pillar that influences market access and long-term competitiveness.

Under Armour shared that working closely with suppliers and system providers helps the company anticipate new requirements and stay ahead of risk. Pettenati explained that prioritizing compliance leads to greater efficiency, stronger brand relationships, and more opportunities to enter demanding global markets.

Nearshoring and Responsible Sourcing Strengthen Speed-to-Market

Speed remains a decisive factor for the apparel and footwear industry. The panel explored the growing interest in nearshoring within the Americas, driven by the need for shorter lead times, reduced transport emissions, and better responsiveness to consumer demand.

Under Armour explained how sourcing closer to home creates agility without compromising sustainability goals. Pettenati described how proximity to North American brands enhances competitiveness, especially when paired with verified inputs and consistent production standards.

Continuous Improvement and Clean Inputs

The discussion closed with a focus on ongoing improvement. At bluesign, clean inputs create the foundation for responsible manufacturing, regulatory readiness, and long-term performance gains. Measuring energy, water, emissions, and chemistry year after year allows brands and manufacturers to track progress and identify areas of improvement.

Panelists agreed that regional collaboration and shared standards offer a powerful model for the future. With stronger alignment between brands, manufacturers, and system partners, the Americas can advance sustainability, strengthen resilience, and set a higher bar for responsible production.

The panel took place on November 20, 2025 as part of AAFA’s annual Western Hemisphere conference in Guatemala City.
