Statements

bluesign® blueXpert workshops for higher resource productivity

On the occasion of the 2015 conference the new and revolutionary application bluesign® blueXpert was introduced. During workshops leading chemical suppliers demonstrated innovative processes and showed specific resource savings by comparison of the new application to actual standard processes. From pretreatment (Blue Magic bleaching system of Archroma, Vario Bleach 3E of CHT/BEZEMA), to dyeing (Avitera SE dyeing process with Avitera Deep Sea SE dye of Huntsman, Sera Eco Wash process with Remazol SAM dyes of DyStar, Bezaktiv Go dyes and Vario Soaping with Cotoblanc SEL of CHT/BEZEMA, Advanced Denim of Archroma) till finishing (Fixapret Resin WFF process of Archroma), processes throughout all wet processing steps could be shown with significant resource saving potentials and less environmental impact. All the processes include bluesign® approved chemical products which ensure the highest level for environment protection, occupational health as well as consumer safety at the same time. The combination of intelligent processes and smart chemistry will lead the global industry up to 50% water savings, 30% energy savings as well as 15% chemicals savings by buying less but the best. The bluesign® blueXpert will be available for all bluesign® system partner manufacturer in the first quarter of 2016.

BSSL revision

bluesign technologies regularly revises limits and usage bans for chemical substances that are published in the bluesign® system substances list (BSSL) Consumer safety limits.

Following the main yearly revision from July 1st, we undertook a smaller revision that will be launched on November 1st, 2015. For an overview and more information please click here.

SVHCs in articles – change in notification and communication duties

In a preliminary ruling, the European Court of Justice has said the 0.1% threshold for notifying substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in articles applies to “each of the articles incorporated as a component of a complex product” rather than to the entire article. To recap, the REACH regulation defines the concept of ‘article’ as ‘an object which during production is given a special shape, surface or design which determines its function to a greater degree than does its chemical composition’.

The new ruling states that producers must disclose the information on SVHCs at the level of the ‘simple’ article, rather than at the aggregate level of the ‘complex’ article. It would mean that in the case of a product such as, for example, a jacket or a backpack the new ruling would apply to each individual component on the garment or piece of equipment. Buttons, cords, buckles and similar accessories used as components of a ‘complex’ article could be considered as single ‘articles’ and subject to the notification and information requirements of REACH Regulation if an SVHC is present above the 0.1% concentration by weight threshold.
